Chiropractic for Children (newborns through 18)
Chiropractic care is not just for adults. Kids can benefit greatly from chiropractic as well—and from as early as when they’re newly born. Adults tend to seek out chiropractic care to treat pain or other physical problems and complaints. And while chiropractic for children can serve the same ends, chiropractic care is not just effective in treating pain or other physical ailments. It’s also helpful for maintaining the optimal physical state to promote general overall health and wellness on a day to day basis. You might even say this is never more important than in one’s growing years.
Why Children Need Chiropractic Care – as much as adults do.
From the time they’re born through about age 18, children’s spines are constantly growing, making this both a precarious time in a person’s physical development and an opportunity as well to influence that development in a positive manner.
What’s more, a child’s natural growth processes are only a small part of the physical stresses a child’s body endures: falls, spills, playground and athletic injuries, carrying heavy book bags and sitting in a classroom all day. All of these cause physical stress to a child’s spine and nervous system.
Even before a baby is born, when still a fetus, the spine can be shoved, jammed, and bent out of place, causing problems both for the mother in delivery and the infant in its earliest stages of development. This means at any point in a child’s growth and development, problem with their spine can occur. And as we know through countless medical studies, problems with the spine can cause or contribute to chronic pain and other health problems.
Spinal and cranial misalignments have been scientifically linked to irritation of the nervous system, which can be responsible for a host of newborn and childhood health problems, including:
- chronic infections
- allergic reactions
- colic and reflux
- headaches
- ear infections
- colds and sore throats
- asthma
- constipation
- ADHD
- breastfeeding trouble
- sleeping difficulties or disturbances
- bedwetting
- uneven shoulder height
- restricted head or neck movement on one side
We also know that spinal alignment impacts many of a baby’s developmental milestones, including holding up their own head, sitting up on their own, crawling, and of course walking. At these key times especially, a baby chiropractor can be invaluable.
Having a child’s spine checked regularly—just like you would for their eyes or teeth—are a first line of defense against postural abnormalities and related health problems, and your first line of offense for growing into optimal physical condition to promote perfect health and wellness.
Is Chiropractic For Kids Safe? – practiced safely for over 100 years and counting….
Pediatric chiropractic adjustments are far gentler than those given to adults, yet are just as effective. Furthermore, children’s spines tend to respond much more quickly to chiropractic adjustments than most adult’s spines, which mean fewer sessions will probably be necessary to correct any complaints and restore the child’s normal functioning.
Most often, chiropractic for children is totally painless. The exception is if a child is suffering from an injury, in which case he or she may be sensitive to touch. After the adjustment, however, that sensitivity should go away. And as for the popping sound most adults associate with chiropractic adjustments, they’re typically not heard when giving chiropractic to kids.
A recent international study conducted by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) showed that of over 10,000 pediatric chiropractic visits logged across the U.S., Canada, and Europe, only a few patients reported discomfort, and even then only minor discomfort. No other adverse effects were reported. Reviews of the preliminary data suggest that one of the safest forms of health care for children may be chiropractic.
