Avoid These Movements if You Have Back Pain
Avoid These Movements if You Have Back Pain
Back pain is a prevalent problem that affects people of all ages. Various factors, such as poor posture, muscle strain, or injury, can cause it. Regardless of the cause, back pain can be excruciating and debilitating, making it difficult for you to carry out your daily activities.
One of the best ways to manage back pain is to avoid movements that exacerbate the pain. This post will discuss some movements you should avoid when you have low back pain.
1. Twisting
Twisting your spine when you have low back pain can worsen the pain and cause further damage to your back. Avoid twisting movements, such as reaching for something behind you or turning to look over your shoulder. If you need to turn, move your entire body instead of twisting your spine.
2. Heavy lifting-Improper Lifting
Lifting heavy objects can put a lot of strain on your back muscles, leading to lower back pain. Avoid lifting heavy objects altogether, or if you must lift, use proper lifting techniques. Bend your knees, keep your back straight when lifting, and use your legs, not your back, to lift the weight.
3. Sitting for long periods
Sitting for extended periods can cause back pain, especially if you have poor posture. Sitting puts pressure on your spine and can cause your muscles to become stiff and sore. If you have a desk job, take frequent breaks to stretch and walk around. Also, invest in an ergonomic chair that supports your back and promotes good posture.
4. Bending forward
Bending forward can exacerbate lower back pain, especially if you turn from the waist instead of the knees. Avoid any activities that involve bending forward, such as picking something up from the floor. Instead, squat down and use your legs to lift the object.
5. High-impact activities
High-impact activities such as running, jumping, or playing sports that involve sudden stops and starts can stress your back muscles and spine. Avoid any high-impact activities until your back pain improves. Instead, opt for low-impact activities such as walking or swimming, less likely to aggravate your back pain.
6. Twisting while lifting
Twisting your spine while lifting something heavy can cause lower back pain and even lead to a herniated disc. Avoid any movements that involve twisting while lifting, such as picking up a heavy box and turning simultaneously. If you need to turn, set the object down first, then turn your entire body.
7. Slouching
Slouching can cause poor posture, which can lead to low back pain. Sit up straight and keep your shoulders back when sitting or standing. Also, avoid hunching over your computer or phone for extended periods.
When you have low back pain, avoiding movements that exacerbate the pain is essential. Avoid twisting, heavy lifting, sitting for long periods, bending forward, high-impact activities, twisting while lifting, and reclining. Instead, focus on movements that promote good posture and don’t put undue stress on your back muscles and spine. Remember, seek medical attention from a qualified healthcare provider if your back pain persists or worsens despite these precautions.
Pain that is moderate to severe or lasting more than a week should be evaluated.
